How to download files with no browser
Even if you don't have a browser you can still connect with our server to transfer files from our download section to your computer. This can be done with a DOS command line utility named FTP for Windows 95. If you follow the instructions below, you will be able to download a browser which will help make your Internet experience more enjoyable. We recommend this method of download only for those who have no web browser installed and have already completed the installation of TCP/IP protocol and have established a dial-up connection to our server. You will need your user name and password which Clair.net has assigned to you. There are several methods of quick, efficient, and easy downloads available to you once you have a browser installed. Take your time and follow each instruction carefull y, and you will be surfing the Web in no time.

  • Click on My Computer, then Dial-up Networking, then Clair.net. To make the connection, type your password then click on Connect. Wait until you are fully connected and the option disconnect appears. That's how you will know that you are actually on-line with our server. Once you are on-line(a dial-up connection has been established):

  • You must first decide which browser you want to install on your computer. We have the following browser's available for downloading at this time:
    Internet Explorer 4.0
    Netscape Communicator 4.0
    Netscape Navigator Gold 3.04

  • When you are ready to get started, please close all open applications. Click on Start Menu, then Programs, then MS-DOS prompt. You must download the new files to a temporary directory(C:\temp) so you can manipulate the newly downloaded files later on. So type "cd.." until you arrive at "C:\" prompt then type "cd temp". Your Dos prompt should now be C:\temp.

  • All ready? Type "ftp". You will notice that the prompt has changed to FTP>. Type "open 207.219.65.4". Type anonymous and your e-mail adresse (example: james@clair.net) this was assigned to you by clair.net. You should now be logged on to our ftp site.

  • Type "cd Internet" and then "ls" to see a list of downloadable programs. When you have chosen the appropriate file name, type "get internetexplorer4.exe" (or whichever browser you have chosen). This will download the files to your temporary directory. It will only take a few minutes, depending on the speed of your modem.

  • And that's it for the download! At the FTP> prompt type "disconnect" then "quit".

  • You will now be at the dos prompt "C:\temp". Type "exit" to return to windows. You will find your newly downloaded file in the temp directory. All you have to do is double click on it's icon and follow the installation instructions. Don't forget to restart your computer after the install is complete. You are now ready to surf the Web with your new browser!

  • There are all sorts of plug-ins available which enhance the performance of your particular browser. You can download some of these from our website under Members->cd-rom. ENJOY!
